CHIP Administrative Options

On February 7, 2006, legislators, advocates, health care providers, and other interested parties met with DPHHS staff to explore options of how the state can best serve the greatest number of children under the Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP).

Options include: continuing the current practice of purchasing a fully insured plan directly from an insurance company; having the state serve as the insurer in conjunction with a third party administrator (claims processor); or having the state serve as the insurer and claims processor of the plan.

On April 7, the Department issued a request for proposals to determine the cost of hiring a third-party administrator for CHIP. Details of the recommendation are available below in the document entitled "CHIP Administration Recommendation, April 2006."
